Interview with Rugal from Nancy Golden's RING OF ROSIN

We’re thrilled to be talking to Rugal from Nancy Golden's Ring of Rosin.  It is a pleasure to have him with us today at Pimp That Character!

Thank you for your interview, Rugal.  How old are you and what do you do for a living?

Thanks for having me! I’m not exactly sure how old I am – I was born the year after a great drought had stricken Elayas. We don’t track our date of birth in Elayas, but I would guess I am around fifteen or sixteen years old. My current role is something I never in my wildest dreams thought would happen. I am King of Elayas. Being king keeps me quite busy. I had to battle the evil usurper Oldag to gain the throne and keeping everything running smoothly is a huge task. I am fortunate to be surrounded by family members and counselors that are very wise and experienced to help me.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

Sure! I possess a magical power called dynamis. While there are many different types of dynamis – mine is pretty rare.  I can transform myself into animal form. It was scary when I first discovered it, but I must admit it is very handy. One of my favorite forms is turning into a wolf, although depending on the occasion I might turn into a bear, a bird of prey, or even an ant.

What would I love the most about you?

Hmmm…that might be a great question for my mother, Lady Mura, or my betrothed, Lissa. I care deeply for the people around me and I am willing to learn. That is a very important trait for anyone, but especially for a young king responsible for the care of his people.

What makes you laugh out loud?

Argothal makes me laugh out loud. He is so fierce-looking yet tries so hard to make others comfortable. By the way, Argothal is a dragon. He guarded the possessions I needed to become king in his treasure cave - the Sword of Fate, the Ring of Rosin, and the Key of Power. That is how we met.

What is your most treasured possession?

I don’t really think I possess Treble but rather, he chose me to be his person. I found him injured in the forest and nursed him back to health. Treble is a flutebird, said to be a descendant of the Bird of the Mountains which guarded the Stone of Fire. It’s a very interesting fable that you can learn more about in the Ring of Rosin. Treble comes and goes as he pleases, but always returns to be with me.

Are you a loner or do you prefer to be surrounded by friends?

I would say I am both – depending on my mood. Growing up, I was often alone, and I cherish having that time to reflect on my own thoughts, but I deeply appreciate my friends. I can’t imagine life without them, and I can’t wait for our next adventure. Life is much richer when we open our hearts and minds to others, even if they are different from us.

What is in your refrigerator right now?

Hmmmm…what’s a refrigerator?

What is your greatest fear?

I think my greatest fear is failing my people. Being a king is hard. Before, I was just responsible for myself but now, all of Elayas depends on me. I want to keep my kingdom safe and help my people flourish, but there is a lot of evil in the world. Sometimes I am afraid of what might happen and wonder if I will be able to defend Elayas from any threats that may arise.

If you could change one physical thing about yourself, what would that be?

I am pretty happy with myself. The Swordsman has been tutoring me in the art of combat and wielding the Sword of Fate has really built up my arms. I really can’t think of anything.

Who is your best friend?

My best friend is Tonar. He is about my age, and we met during my journey of self-discovery that led me to join the Sepharim and Patriotes in overthrowing the evil usurper. I like that we became friends before I assumed the throne. He is a very talented artist, and I commissioned him to do the paintings for the castle’s main hall.

Do you have children?

I hope to, someday. I am betrothed to my beloved, Lissa, daughter of Ethiod Stargazer. We have talked about having children and look forward to starting a family sometime after we marry. I know everyone will be excited to have an heir to the throne.

What is your favorite weather?

I love when it is sunny –with a hint of coolness in the air. Brisk weather is perfect for riding horses, which is one of my very favorite things to do. All of my family and friends enjoy horses, so riding is a wonderful time spent with people I love. I have an awesome bay horse named Tag who loves to run.

Do you like to cook?  If so, what is your favorite thing to cook?

No, but I love to eat. My father, Jackal, has a weakness for Farathian cheese, which I share.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

We have been through a lot during our fight to regain the throne and I’ve come to realize that every day is a gift. We were attacked by deadly gormalins, and we survived that. I was attacked by an evil priest and survived that.  And of course I had the battle to the death with Oldag. So, I think the best that I can do is live each day the best I can. I always want to make sure that the people around me know that I love and appreciate them, and I try to do that through my actions. I also am concerned about my kingdom so if I was going to die tomorrow, I want to be confident that I have good people in place to continue running the kingdom, which I have. So, I don’t know if I would change a whole lot except to be with Lissa, Mura, Jackal, the Swordsman and all of the people that I love. Maybe we could all go ride horses together one last time.
