{Character Interview} Addy Verges of 'Chasing Hindy'

We’re thrilled to be talking to Addy Verges from Darin Gibby’s, Chasing Hindy.  It is a pleasure to have her with us today at Pimp That Character!

Thank you for your interview, Addy.  How old are you and what do you do for a living?

I am 28 years old, and I’m a patent attorney with a prestigious law firm in Palo Alto, California.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

I was born in Vietnam and adopted by an America couple, who had their problems. My father had an affair and left my mother. His side of the story is that she was an alcoholic and he couldn’t live with her. The end result was that I was mostly left to fend for myself.

What would I love the most about you?

I am driven to succeed. Even without help from my parents, I earned a chemical engineer degree and put myself through law school.

What would I hate the most about you?

I don’t dare to trust anyone. I’ve been hurt too many times. That’s why I like science—it can’t let you down.

Where do you go when you are angry?

I bury myself in my work. I just became the youngest partner at my law firm and I always have plenty of cases to distract me.

What is your most treasured possession?

That would be Hindy, my cherry red Shelby Mustang. I’ve retrofitted my car so that it runs on hydrogen. And, I’ve strapped a rather large hydrogen-filled balloon to the roof. It looks like a blimp floating above my car. I use it to market my law practice to all the clean tech companies in the Bay Area. I want them to know that I understand innovation.

What is your greatest fear?

Being let down by somebody I might fall in love with. That’s probably why I’m not in a serious relationship.

What is your favorite weather?

I live in Sunnyvale, California and I love it in the morning when the fog is just burning off and the sun peaks through. It’s the perfect time to get in my bike and take a ride down to the local coffee house.

Someone is secretly in love with you.  Who is it and how do you feel about that?

There’s this guy named Quinn who wants me to leave my law firm and join his startup company. He claims that he needs a smart and ambitious patent lawyer to protect his new invention. But the way his eyes shift when he speaks with me makes me wonder if there isn’t another motivation. I should be concerned about that, but for some reason it intrigues me.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a scientist or an engineer. I love dealing with facts. Science can’t let you down.

Darin’s first book, Why Has America Stopped Inventing?, explored the critical issue of America’s broken patent system.  His second book, The Vintage Club, tells the story of a group of the world’s wealthiest men who are chasing a legend about a wine that can make you live forever. His third book, Gil, is about a high school coach who discovers that he can pitch with deadly speed and is given an offer to play with the Rockies during a player’s strike. Gil soon discovers, however, that his unexpected gift is the result of a rare disease, and continuing to pitch may hasten his own death.
With a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and a Master of Business Administration degree, he is highly regarded in Denver’s legal and business community as a patent strategist, business manager, and community leader. An avid traveler and accomplished triathlete, Darin also enjoys back country fly-fishing trips and skiing in the Rocky Mountains. He lives in Denver with his wife, Robin, and their four children.
