Character Interview: Scrooje from 'On Top of the World'

We’re thrilled to be talking to Scrooje Ebonyzer from David Lamb’s On Top Of The World.  It is a pleasure to have him with us today at Pimp That Character!

Thank you for your interview, Scrooje.  How old are you and what do you do for a living?

I’m thirty-two years old. What do I do for a living? I do me. I’m a music star, fashion mogul, talent agent, music producer. I’m getting into making films and doing theater.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

What would I love the most about you?

Underneath my egotistical, materialistic, uncaring persona I’m a hopeless romantic who cares deeply about people and longs for a chance to win back, Belle, the woman I drove away with my greed and stupidity.

What is the trait you most not like about yourself?

My disbelief that I’m worthy of love because I believe that no matter how successful I am that I’m doomed to end up back where I started, broke and alone. And my unwillingness to admit to the people who matter most to me that I regret some of the things I’ve done.

If you could change one physical thing about yourself, what would that be?

Look at me—I’m handsome, suave, rich. You can’t be serious.(Well, actually, I do wish that as a kid I hadn’t had a pip-squeak voice, needed coke-bottle glasses and been the smallest boy in school, but that’s it.)

Who is your best friend?

My best friend was Marley. He dies at his birthday party in Brazil when he fell into his pool and drowned (he was a little tipsy at the time). When I was in elementary school I was the most picked on kid all the way through freshman year of college. But Marley was an athlete that everyone looked up to and he always protected me. His family even adopted me and rescued me from foster care.

What’s your idea of a perfect meal?

A private dinner with Belle on a yatch sailing around Manhattan.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Not poor! I grew up in foster care, my sister Fan and I were forcibly separate when I was 12 and more than anything I wanted to have money so I wouldn’t be subject to people’s whims.

What is your most treasured possession?

My Janjaap Ruijssenaars million dollar Floating Bed. (Trust me—it’s the best sleep you’ll ever have.) Well, actually, if was completely honest. My real most treasured possession my ring. Even though Belle and I haven’t spoken in three years, I wear it under my shirt every day, and even take it out and polish it every now and then.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

If the angels are winning – find Belle and apologize. And then apologize to Cratchit for being a prick instead of a good friend.

If the demons are winning – put on a free concert in Central Park entitled Me. Myself and I. Copyright the phrase and sell a million t-shirts at $40 a pop. Then have the money buried in a mausoleum with me and have engraved on the Mauseleum – You Can Take It With You!

About the Author

David Lamb is a native New Yorker, born and raised, bitten with the writing bug since he was in elementary school and had handwriting nobody could decipher. Like Charles Dickens, David grew up a poor boy in the big city who found that the pen really is mightier than the sword. In middle school Lamb's hero was David Lampel whose velvet voice could be heard reporting the news over David's grandmother's radio. Whenever he heard him on the radio, David would substitute Lamb for Lampel and pretend he was delivering the news. Sure that he was destined to be a famous reporter David was happy to go to a high school with a journalism program. Like most kids, by the time he finished high school he had a whole new career in mind. After high school he went to Hunter College and majored in Economics because he wanted to be cool like that college kid who came to speak at his last year of high school. He was an Economics major, he was dressed sharp and above-all the girls thought he was the man! So like any unreasonable high school boy fueled by overactive hormones David figured if he majored in Economics they'd think he was cool. After finishing college David went on to law school at NYU, but all the time writing was still his heart. While working as a lawyer by day, at night he transformed into a writer and eventually wrote and produced the award-winning hit off-Broadway romantic comedy Platanos Y Collard Greens. Being a writer and having the chance make people laugh out loud while challenging them to think about the world around them, and inspire each of us to believe in the power of love and our own ability to overcome life's challenges is a great gift that David truly enjoys and thanks you for allowing him to share with you in On Top Of The World (Until The Bell Chimes).

About the Book:

2016 BEST FICTION-Pacific Book Awards. FROM THE FUNNY AND NATURALLY BRILLIANT DAVID LAMB, award-winning playwright of the New York Times celebrated play, Platanos Y Collard Greens, comes a modern spin on Dickens' classic tale that perfectly combines humor and romance in a story re-imagined for our digital, consumerist age.  This version of Scrooge and Belle is familiar, yet unlike any you've come across before. Scrooge, or rather Scrooje, is music's
biggest superstar, with one hundred million albums sold, fifteen million devoted YouTube subscribers, two and a half million Facebook likes, and twenty-five million fanatical Twitter followers known as Scroojites. Belle, is a legal shark who gulps down her opposition voraciously and whose beauty and stunning figure causes traffic accidents as she zips through the sidewalks of Manhattan stylishly adorned and taking no prisoners.   They never imagined being music's most powerful couple, but that's exactly what happened when Belle fell head over heels and gave the Coke-bottle glasses wearing, plaid and stripe attired, scrawny, biggest nerd on her college campus the ultimate makeover, turning him into a fashion impresario whose style sets trends from Milan to NY Fashion Week and who can be seen courtside at the NBA Finals sporting a perfectly-fitted cashmere suit.   Then it happens. Belle realizes too late that she's created a chart-topping monster as Scrooje's ego explodes and he starts acting a fool.   Now, it's been three years since they ve spoken. But tonight at Hollywood s biggest red carpet event, with the whole world watching, they'll be given a second chance.   Will Scrooje listen to the ghostly-advice of Marley, his best friend since the fourth grade, who at the time of his untimely drowning at his Brazilian poolside birthday bash was as big a star as Scrooje? Will Scrooje finally do right by his number one artist, Cratchit, a genius comedian, who Scrooje invariably rip offs every chance he gets?   And with twenty-five million viewers tuned in will Scrooje finally shed his ego, jeopardize his image and declare his love for Belle, the one he betrayed and let slip away?   Second chances don't often come around. Will Belle even give him a chance?   Mixing heart, soul, bling and romance in a fresh, original satire about race, class and celebrity worship Lamb establishes himself as one of the most talented and amazing writers today. And leaves no doubt that the Pacific Book Awards chose wisely when they selected On Top Of The World as the year's Best Fiction.

Character Interview: Kate Beckham of 'Beckham 101'

We’re thrilled to be talking to Kate Beckham the author from The Kate and Robert Chronicles and her new book, Beckham 101.  It is a pleasure to have you with us today at Pimp That Character!

Thank you for your interview, Kate.  How old are you and what do you do for a living?

Yes, thank you for this opportunity. My name is Kate Beckham. I am 26 and I have my nursing license but I am newly wedded and currently a stay at home wife taking care of my husband Robert and our household.

What makes you laugh out loud?

Oh… a lot of things… but lately it’s been getting away with surprising my husband Robert. He is a very well trained police officer and can read people very well. Usually nothing gets by him but I have managed to pull a few surprises out of my hat without him finding out until it was time. There was this one time a few months ago when we were on our honeymoon in San Diego that he had planned and everything was just perfect. He spared no expense I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start our life as a couple… anyways I wanted to do something  nice for him so I managed to pull off an evening at the Padres game.. My husband loves baseball… that night was amazing and his reaction was even better when he found out…

What is your greatest fear?

Right now my greatest fear would be if something happened to my husband. He is a highly trained police officer and he is the top man on the municipal police SWAT team. He has only been called out once so far since we have been together but that was once too much for me. It took that night to really make me hate his chosen profession with all the danger that he faces on a daily level... There are some really crazy people out there and he has such a high risk job… so yes my greatest fear is losing Robert. He really has become my world.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

My perfect day would just be spending quiet time with my husband.. We do so much and Robert is constantly training… I still can’t believe the energy he has.. he is a machine and being a nurse I just worry he is gonna burn himself out.. so my perfect day would be hanging out with the hubby, cooking some food together and chilling on the couch.

What are three must haves when shopping at the grocery store?

Oh… my three must haves are my list from Robert and I planning our meals for the week, me sticking to the budget when I walk down the cookie aisle and number three.. number three… umm.. oh.. I never remember to buy laundry detergent… I don’t know why it never makes the list. So I should go down every aisle just for that reason.

Are you a loner or do you prefer to surround yourself with friends?

I am equally both. I love to be around my friends and family. My husband right now wants me to be everywhere with him so my down time lately is only when he is at work and I have to say… I am enjoying that at the moment to get the housework done but here is the funny thing, when I am home alone all’s I think about is Robert and how I can’t wait to see him again.

Do you have children?

We do not have children but my husband wants a houseful. He would like nothing better than to keep me barefoot and pregnant the rest of my life. We have been back and forth on when to start a family and as much as I want a little Robert running around right now that my husband has introduced me to the world of travel and I am liking it just being us at the moment. His mother lives in Ireland and his dad lives in England. We got to spend some time over there and I can’t wait to go back. Oh I went to France for a very quick trip too! We are definitely going back there for at least a week without a baby.

Someone is secretly in love with you.  Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Oh jeez… I pray for their sole… My over protective lug will bury them. Let’s home there is nobody secretly in love with me because if Robert finds out they will be dead.

Do you like to cook?  If so, what is your favorite thing to cook?

Oh… I am becoming a cook book hoarder.. I cannot throw out a single recipe… I have several chef hero’s … Julia Childs, Lucinda Scala Quinn to name a few and I love watching cooking shows and trying new recipes. Sometimes planning Robert’s meals for the week is challenging because there are many good things out there… I try to balance it out by his training for the week because he needs a lot of lean proteins. I just love to cook always have since I was little. Seafood is new to me and Robert loves seafood, I’m not that big into it. I like fish and chips, that’s about my history with seafood so I am now learning to cook seafood.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

I would cry. My life is just starting. I have a husband that I adore and new responsibilities I am getting use to with new family I am adjusting to and love very much. I will never give up, never surrender!

Author: Suzanne Eglington
Publisher: Xlibris
Pages: 280
Genre: Romantic Suspense

BECKHAM 101 is the third installment in the Kate and Robert Chronicles by author Suzanne Eglington. Eglington invites readers into the intimate inner world of the newly wedded duo as they learn to navigate life as a committed couple. Settling down brings new perspectives and people into Kate’s and Robert’s lives, along with the exposure of more of Robert’s mysterious past. For Kate, being married to a top cop means managing both desire and reality.
Following a one-week courtship, Kate submits to her love for Robert, an intense super cop who has been patiently waiting for his opportunity to seize the one women he truly desires. Their quick marriage means frequent amorous entanglements, but it also means that Kate’s knowledge of her new husband’s personal history is limited. Kate must steady herself to cope with the slow unveiling of her husband’s past.
Being the wife of an influential and respected police officer means a change in lifestyle for Kate. Robert is fiercely protective of his wife and enjoys spending as much of his free time with her as possible. Marriage to Robert means Kate has inherited a family of high-performing cops who not only open their hearts for her but also provide protection when ghosts from Robert’s past threaten to harm her.
In BECKHAM 101, the author introduces new characters into the series, including Robert’s best friend, Jimmy and Kate’s wise and skilled Uncle Jack. As with the two previous books in the Kate and Robert Chronicles, Eglington’s mission is to offer readers a respite from their daily lives. “First and foremost,” Eglington says she wants her readers to feel “I have entertained you with my characters and possibly left a lasting enjoyable impression that fed the passion and intensity of the love between Kate and Robert. Second, that I was able to take you away from your everyday routine to enjoy some downtime with a story you are falling in love with.” Beyond the steamy intimacy and the thread of danger embedded in her stories, Eglington’s books also highlight the lives of cops. “My stories are about the lives cops lead away from the police department. I want readers to think of the men behind the badge and the people who could be in their lives.”
By gradually revealing some elements of Robert’s past in BECKHAM 101, Eglington is priming readers for the fourth book in this sexy and suspense-filled series.

Character Interview: Aakti of 'Unawqi, Hunter of the Sun'

We’re thrilled to be talking to Aakti from Kali Kucera’s Unawqi, Hunter of the Sun.  It is a pleasure to have him with us today at Pimp That Character!

Thank you for your interview, Aakti.  How old are you and what do you do for a living?

Lets’ see, I’m getting on about 4 and a half billion years last time I checked.  I’ve been around quite a while, before any of you were here for sure.  My job is not one I necessarily enjoy, which is keeping you warm and alive.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

I’m recognizably yellow; sometimes orange or purple if you throw up enough smog or dust in front of your eyes.

What would I love the most about you?

Love? A lot of people worship me, I know that much.  They have either a ceremonial way of loving me, or they just love me after it’s rained too much.

What would I hate the most about you?

That the love is not mutual.  Or maybe you just hate me after you’ve fallen asleep at the beach too long.

Where do you go when you are angry?

Oh, that’s a good one.  My mother says I’m always angry about something, but I’m also moving all the time, so it depends on where you’re standing.

What is your most treasured possession?

My seeds. They are the only reason I’m here. They’ve been stolen from me and I have to get them back, no matter what the cost, no matter how long it takes.
What is the trait you most not like about yourself?

Are you a loner or do you prefer to surround yourself with friends?

I don’t have friends. I have audiences and admirers, and I surround them, not the other way around.

Do you have children?

No, that’s a vicious rumor that’s floating around, and I challenge you and anyone else to prove it!

About the Book:

Title: Unawqi, Hunter of the Sun
Author: Kali Kucera
Publisher: Independent
Pages: 218
Genre: Mythical Realism

In a time when supernatural and industrial worlds are staged to collide, an Andean boy finds himself in the center of an epic struggle between the cosmos and the earth. Unawqi is born with both insurmountable power and a fate of certain death, both of which are challenged by his hunt of the emperor, Aakti, the Sun: the very force that desires to abandon the earth unless Unawqi can overcome him.
Premise: How easily we take the Sun for granted. We are conditioned to its rising and setting on time, and assume it enjoys doing so, or more likely is indifferent. Unawqi, Hunter of the Sun reveals a more perilous tale: the Sun, Aakti, is a being who is a reluctant player in providing light and warmth to our world, and even more has always desired to leave us to die if he didn’t have certain personal complications standing in his way. Aakti will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even if that involves murder of his own kin or annihilation of an entire living planet. Ironically, what holds him back is the very life he is creating; the family from which he tries to but cannot wrest control, and among them a young intrepid boy emerges, a hunter who sets out on a journey, not to stop the Sun, but to overcome him with a force we also take for granted: our humanity.
